A common mistake is matching the panel wattage to the pump wattage one-to-one. In practice a pump needs a comfortably larger array so it can start early, keep running under passing cloud and reach its rated output around the middle of the day.
As a starting rule, size the PV array to roughly 1.3–1.5× the pump’s rated power — the same sizing logic used by the major brands. So a 1,000 W pump wants around 1,300–1,500 Wp of panels. Local sun hours, temperature and how deep the water sits all fine-tune the figure.
